Talk about humbling...

Over the past few weeks I have been saddened to see posts on facebook that people are posting about their kids returning to school. You know, the one's like "My kids are driving me nuts, I am so ready for school to start" and "I need some 'me time', come on school!". I have pondered these posts and thought to myself "Boy, I am glad I don't feel that way about my kids". Then, it happened. Facebook has a new feature that shows you your posts from that day a year ago. Today mine from last year made me catch my breath, and made me extra sad. This is what it said: (screenshot)

Talk about stepping on my own toes! When we moved here in March 2010, we had decided to try public school. We had heard the schools here were so wonderful. Well, the last 2 months of 6th grade were wonderful for our daughter. We went through the summer planning on putting them into public school in the fall, and that was where my mind was. Funny, if I had only known then that they would do less than two weeks in public school before it was obvious they needed to be home.

I can just praise the Lord that I am in a different place than I was then. I am so excited about school to start here at our house on the 29th, but it has nothing to do with getting my children out of my hair. It has to do with the time we will spend together learning and growing and being together.

Here are my two other status updates from later that day:

  1. I have a 12 year old who will be in 7th grade this year.
Last summer two other families decided to start a private school and asked if we wanted to send our son. I had homeschooled him up until last year. As an only child he struggled with selfishness and we thought it best to send him so he could be around others. It worked! He learned to share and that there are others who are boss etc. He learned that girls do not have cooties and are fun to play with as his best friend's sisters. They are all his cousins so no girlfriends there! He did well and it was great for him.
But I miss him and he missed me right at first! He can't wait to go back this coming year!
It is hard for me to send him away but best! Hubby and I enjoy Wed. our date day when JB is off at school and DH has off work. But it isn't that I can't wait to send him away!
Blessings to you as you do what is best for your son. It's so nice to be able to do what is best for our kids isn't it?

  2. I think all moms need a break from time to time - to realize how blessed we are, if for no other reason... :) But I do love the flexibility of homeschooling.

  3. I have noticed lots of Facebook posts about the kids going back to school, too. I try to be supportive of my friends who choose to send their children off to public school, and am glad that so many of them have Christian teachers and are doing well. Yet I don't deny it does make me a little sad.

I *love* getting feedback and comments. I will publish links to other blogs, just as long as they are not derogatory to a belief I hold in high esteem. I will post comments that disagree with my stance, as long as they are respectfully written. Most importantly, I will do my best to reply to all of my comments. Thank you for taking the time to read my blog.
